A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Violet Oakley murals.
WHEREAS, In 1912, Pennsylvania chose Violet Oakley to design
murals for Pennsylvania's new Senate Chamber; and
WHEREAS, At the time of her selection, Violet Oakley was a
renown muralist and illustrator from Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Oakley was the first woman in the United States
to be granted a commission of this size for a public space; and
WHEREAS, She completed the murals in 1919; and
WHEREAS, In honor of the 100th anniversary of her murals, the
Senate Library is featuring an exhibit on Violet Oakley from
January until May of this year; and
WHEREAS, The general public is invited to experience the
mastery of material and depth of thought which inspired Violet
Oakley to create lasting monuments to democracy in the
Commonwealth and for all humankind; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the 100th anniversary of
the Violet Oakley murals.
