A RESOLUTION
Designating March 25, 2020, as "Pennsylvania Female Veterans
Day."
WHEREAS, Women have an extensive and proud history of
essential but underrecognized service in every branch of the
military; and
WHEREAS, Women were present in Continental Army camps,
attached in support roles or disguised as male soldiers; and
WHEREAS, Before integration, women were often limited to
nursing and clerical work; and
WHEREAS, The first military enlistments of women occurred
during the World War I era; and
WHEREAS, The Women's Armed Services Integration Act
authorized enlistment and appointment of women as full members
of the armed forces with veterans benefits in 1948; and
WHEREAS, During the last two decades, expanded integration

has led to the advancement of the first female graduates of the
Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel, the first female
fighter pilots flying combat missions in Iraq, the first female
commander of a United States Navy ship and the first female
member of the Pennsylvania National Guard to pass Army Ranger
School; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, Air Force General Lori Robinson was the
first woman to lead a unified combatant command as well as the
highest-ranking woman in the history of the United States
military, Army Captain Kristen Griest transferred from military
police to become the first female infantry officer and Army
Sergeant Shelby Atkins became the first female enlisted infantry
solider; and
WHEREAS, In 2017, the first three women in the Marine Corps
infantry were assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, as rifle,
machine gun and mortar specialists; and
WHEREAS, An estimated 2 million veterans of the armed forces,
or 9% of all veterans, are female; and
WHEREAS, More than 60,000 female veterans reside in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives recognizes women in the
military who, through their selfless and brave service,
strengthen our national defense and protect our freedoms; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives extends thanks for the
experience and contributions of female veterans throughout our
Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
25, 2020, as "Pennsylvania Female Veterans Day"; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
