A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of October 2019 as "Blindness Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, More than 25 million Americans report experiencing
significant vision loss, including approximately 6.5 million
seniors 65 years of age or older; and
WHEREAS, The leading cause of vision impairment for
individuals over 50 years of age is age-related macular
degeneration, with approximately 15 million Americans affected
and 200,000 new cases reported annually; and
WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1910, the Pennsylvania
Association for the Blind and its member agencies have
tirelessly supported and promoted the interests of individuals
who are blind or visually impaired and provided essential
services to assist blind Pennsylvanians in achieving self-
reliance and autonomy; and

WHEREAS, The Commonwealth supports the vitally important work
of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind as they enhance
public awareness on the prevention and treatment of blindness
and other serious vision impairments which are highlighted
during events throughout the month of October each year;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of October 2019 as "Blindness Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
need to educate residents about the prevention and treatment of
blindness.
