INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
OCTOBER 1, 2020
A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of October 2020 as "Fire Prevention Month"
and recognizing the week of October 4 through 10, 2020, as
"National Fire Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Fires are a serious safety concern both nationally
and locally; and
WHEREAS, People face the greatest risk of fire in their
homes; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA), more than 1.3 million fires were reported by
fire departments in 2019, resulting in approximately 3,400
civilian deaths; and
WHEREAS, In a fire, seconds can mean the difference between
escaping safely or having lives end in tragedy; and
WHEREAS, It is critical for everyone to have an escape plan
that includes two exits from each room and a path outside from
each exit; and

WHEREAS, The NFPA has chosen "Serve Up Fire Safety in the
Kitchen" for the 2020 "National Fire Prevention Week" theme to
educate the community on cooking hazards, the dangers of
unattended cooking, and precautions that can be taken to prevent
cooking-related fires, because cooking is the leading cause of
home fires and home fire injuries in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Promoting this theme provides an ideal opportunity
to educate the public of the danger fire poses in homes
throughout our communities; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's first responders exhibit great
dedication to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home
fire injuries through prevention and protection education and
through their quick response to emergencies; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of October 2020 as "Fire Prevention Month" and recognize
the week of October 4 through 10, 2020, as "National Fire
Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
residents, landlords, businesses and other property owners to
protect their homes, businesses and property by heeding the
important safety messages of "National Fire Prevention Week,"
which can be found on the NPFA's publicly accessible Internet
website; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend all
firefighters, other first responders and all who provide support
for their efforts to prevent, fight and stop fires.
