A RESOLUTION
Urging the Secretary of State to certify election results by
December 14, 2020.
WHEREAS, The United States was founded on July 4, 1776,
following the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by
Congress; and
WHEREAS, The United States was established on a set of
principles that have shaped public life since its founding; and
WHEREAS, Of those principles, the belief in democracy and a
republic are some of the most evident and prominent; and
WHEREAS, Democracy is premised on the direct participation of
the majority of citizens in government while a republic allows
citizens to give consent to a body of elected representatives to
make laws; and
WHEREAS, The United States is a democratic republic where
citizens determine who will represent their interests; and
WHEREAS, Members of the General Assembly, as elected
representatives of communities throughout this Commonwealth, are

sworn to uphold an oath of office that includes the protection
of democracy and defense of the republic; and
WHEREAS, Voting is a key element to the democratic process as
it acts to voice the opinion of the majority and determine who
will represent the interests of those individuals; and
WHEREAS, On November 3, 2020, the 59th presidential election
will occur; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has been a key State during
previous presidential elections and will be one of the few
states that likely determine the winner of this year's election;
and
WHEREAS, Given the significance of this election, as well as
extenuating circumstances related to the ongoing COVID-19
pandemic, it is paramount that the results of elections in this
Commonwealth are certified by December 14, 2020; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the
Secretary of State to certify election results by December 14,
2020.
