A RESOLUTION
Recognizing May 17, 2020, as "DIPG Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) affects 200
to 400 children in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, Brain cancer is the leading disease-related cause of
death in children in the United States; and
WHEREAS, DIPG is the second most common pediatric brain
cancer and the leading cause of childhood death due to brain
tumors; and
WHEREAS, Children diagnosed with DIPG have a median survival
time of only nine months postdiagnosis with treatment and a five
year survival rate of less than one percent; and
WHEREAS, Prognosis has not improved for children with DIPG in
more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Funding for research for pediatric and high-
mortality-rate cancers needs to be given greater consideration

for research grants with government resources; and
WHEREAS, "DIPG Awareness Day" is recognized to:
(1) Raise awareness about the current challenges and
clinical trial opportunities relating to DIPG in the medical
research system.
(2) Encourage the allocation of sufficient research
resources into cures for rare pediatric cancers, including
DIPG.
(3) Encourage public and private sources of research
funding to elevate consideration of the mortality rate of a
type of cancer during grant application processes.
(4) Support expanded research to develop effective
treatments and provide comprehensive care for children with
DIPG and their families;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May 17,
2020, as "DIPG Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
