A RESOLUTION
Designating October 4, 2020, as "Truck Driver Appreciation Day"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Alexander Winton invented the semi-trailer in
Cleveland, Ohio, in 1898; and
WHEREAS, The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics
estimates there are 1 million professional men and women
classified as light delivery or heavy and tractor-trailer truck
drivers; and
WHEREAS, More than 80% of United States communities depend
solely on trucking for delivery of their goods and commodities;
and
WHEREAS, Truckers deliver about 10 billion tons of freight,
or about 70% of all the freight moved in the United States; and
WHEREAS, The average trucker will drive over 100,000 road
miles per year; and

WHEREAS, Professional truck drivers faced unprecedented
circumstances to safely deliver important goods to every home,
community, school and business in this Commonwealth during the
COVID-19 pandemic; and
WHEREAS, Hard-working men and women who faced significant
hardships of closed restaurants and rest areas in order to
maintain the supply chain within this Commonwealth are the
lifeblood of our economy during the COVID-19 pandemic; and
WHEREAS, Truck drivers worked longer hours, under stressful
circumstances, to keep the shelves of our local supermarkets
stocked with life-essential products; and
WHEREAS, Truck drivers risked exposure to the coronavirus in
order to ensure that hospitals and clinics received life-saving
blood, medicine and diagnostic equipment; and
WHEREAS, Truck drivers are the unsung heroes of our economy
and the COVID-19 pandemic; and
WHEREAS, The observance of "Truck Driver Appreciation Day"
honors professional truck drivers for their dedication in
tackling one of our economy's most demanding and critical jobs
during unprecedented circumstances; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
4, 2020, as "Truck Driver Appreciation Day" in Pennsylvania; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
residents, organizations and communities of this Commonwealth to
join in this observance by commending professional truck drivers
for the essential role they have played in the lives of every
Pennsylvanian. 10-4.
