A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh
and its renovated facility which provides a safe and
accessible environment for residents and clients.
WHEREAS, On May 5, 1974, the Women's Center & Shelter of
Greater Pittsburgh was created to become one of the first
shelters for survivors of domestic violence in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, Through its programs and services, the Women's
Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh employs more than 80
staff members and assists 8,000 adults and children every year;
and
WHEREAS, The Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh
houses 500 individuals in its emergency shelter each year; and
WHEREAS, Services offered by the Women's Center & Shelter of
Greater Pittsburgh include support groups, individual therapy,
hotline counseling, referrals to resources, civil legal
representation, assistance in navigating the court and medical

systems and children's services; and
WHEREAS, The Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh
offers aid to adult immigrants and women who speak English as a
second language; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Women's Center & Shelter of
Greater Pittsburgh has provided several shelters as its clients'
needs grew and expanded; and
WHEREAS, From summer 2016 to spring 2019, the Women's Center
& Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh underwent a full renovation to
provide additional security features and improve functionality
and comfort for adults and children; and
WHEREAS, The Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh
creates a safe space for healing and promotes the forward
movement of its clients; and
WHEREAS, The architectural firm Rothschild Doyno
Collaborative assisted the Women's Center & Shelter of Greater
Pittsburgh in its journey to better meet the needs of its
residents and clients; and
WHEREAS, The American Institute of Architects Pittsburgh
Chapter granted the 2019 Design Pittsburgh award in Social
Equity in Design to Rothschild Doyno Collaborative for the
renovated Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh
facility; and
WHEREAS, The Design Pittsburgh jury noted that the Rothschild
Doyno Collaborative and the Women's Center & Shelter of Greater
Pittsburgh successfully created a sanctuary for clients by
establishing a shelter environment that emphasizes safety and
builds trust while ensuring accessibility for a wide range of
needs; and
WHEREAS, The partnership of the Women's Center & Shelter of

Greater Pittsburgh and Rothschild Doyno Collaborative are
committed to assisting victims of domestic violence and their
children; and
WHEREAS, Hard work and dedication to the organization's
objectives created a shelter for its residents and other clients
who describe the facility as their home; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh and its renovated
facility which provides a safe and accessible environment for
residents and clients.
