A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of August 1 through 7, 2020, as "World
Breastfeeding Week" in Pennsylvania and supporting
breastfeeding as a way to enhance the well-being of all
individuals worldwide.
WHEREAS, "World Breastfeeding Week" was established and is
annually recognized by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding
Action; and
WHEREAS, "World Breastfeeding Week" highlights the critical
importance of breastfeeding children across the globe; and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding is a vital part of sustainable
development and a key contributor to the survival and health of
infants and mothers; and
WHEREAS, "World Breastfeeding Week" involves annual themes
focusing on health care systems, women and work, the
International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes,
community support, ecology, economy, science, education and
human rights; and
WHEREAS, In 2020, "World Breastfeeding Week" focuses on the

impact that infant feeding has on the environment and the
importance of protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding
for the health of the planet and its people; and
WHEREAS, The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action
coordinates the global "World Breastfeeding Week" campaign that
aims to inform, anchor, engage and galvanize action on
breastfeeding and related issues; and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for infants
and contributes to their healthy growth and development; and
WHEREAS, Research suggests that breastfed babies have a lower
risk of acquiring the following:
(1) Asthma.
(2) Childhood leukemia.
(3) Childhood obesity.
(4) Ear infections.
(5) Lower respiratory infections.
(6) Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
(7) Diabetes;
and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding also improves the health and healing
of mothers following childbirth and leads to a lower risk of
acquiring the following:
(1) Type 2 diabetes.
(2) Cardiovascular disease.
(2) Breast cancer.
(3) Ovarian cancer;
and
WHEREAS, The health effects of breastfeeding are well
recognized, and mothers and children in developed nations such
as the United States, as well as those in developing countries,

experience better health outcomes from breastfeeding; and
WHEREAS, Breast milk is uniquely suited to an infant's
nutritional needs and has unparalleled immunological and anti-
inflammatory properties that protect against a host of illnesses
and diseases for both mothers and children; and
WHEREAS, Active support, encouragement and guidance is
required for establishing and sustaining appropriate
breastfeeding practices; and
WHEREAS, It is important that the Commonwealth support
creating an enabling environment for women to breastfeed
successfully; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of August 1 through 7, 2020, as "World Breastfeeding Week"
in Pennsylvania and support breastfeeding as a way to enhance
the well-being of all individuals worldwide.
