A RESOLUTION
Recognizing February 12, 2020, as "World Cholangiocarcinoma Day"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Cholangiocarcinoma, known as bile duct cancer, is a
rare form of cancer that originates from the cells lining the
bile ducts that play a key role in digestion; and
WHEREAS, The three types of cholangiocarcinoma are
intrahepatic, extrahepatic and perihilar; and
WHEREAS, There are approximately 12,000 Americans diagnosed
with cholangiocarcinoma each year in the United States and the
number of individuals who are diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma
is increasing on an annual basis; and
WHEREAS, The mortality rate for individuals diagnosed with
cholangiocarcinoma has increased dramatically in the last
decade; and
WHEREAS, Symptoms of cholangiocarcinoma include jaundice,
abdominal pain, itchy skin and weight loss and the symptoms do
not usually occur until the disease has progressively advanced;

WHEREAS, Individuals with cholangiocarcinoma are typically
diagnosed at a late stage of the disease because there is no
validated early method of detection; and
WHEREAS, Cholangiocarcinoma is among the top eight deadliest
cancers; and
WHEREAS, There is currently no cure for cholangiocarcinoma;
and
WHEREAS, Kelly green is the color representing
cholangiocarcinoma awareness; and
WHEREAS, Foundations, research and teaching hospitals, rare
cancer advocate groups and patient advocate groups from around
the globe have joined forces to recognize February 12 of each
year as "World Cholangiocarcinoma Day"; and
WHEREAS, Increased cholangiocarcinoma advocacy, awareness,
research and education will bring improved outcomes for patients
by promoting earlier detection and treatment and potential
curative methods; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
February 12, 2020, as "World Cholangiocarcinoma Day" in
Pennsylvania.
