A RESOLUTION
Recognizing April 5, 2020, as "Geologists Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is blessed with an abundance of
naturally occurring earth resources, including groundwater,
petroleum oil, natural gas, coal, aggregates and minerals, and
the responsible development of those earth resources is of
primary importance to Pennsylvania's industrial base and economy
and to the welfare of its residents; and
WHEREAS, Proper identification, evaluation and mitigation of
geologic hazards, such as flooding, landsliding, erosion,
surface subsidence, environmental contaminants and radon gas are
vital to the health, safety and welfare of Pennsylvania
residents; and
WHEREAS, The practice of geology involves evaluation of earth
resource occurrences, description of the natural processes
acting on earth materials and evaluation of natural and man-

induced phenomena which may be either useful or hazardous to
residents of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Council of Professional Geologists,
established in 1989, advocated for the advancement of statutory
regulation of the practice of geology in Pennsylvania and
proposed the creation of a licensure requirement for geologists;
and
WHEREAS, On December 16, 1992, in recognition of the need to
ensure responsible, competent and ethical practice of the
profession of geology to the benefit of the residents of this
Commonwealth, the General Assembly enacted the act of December
16, 1992 (P.L.1151, No.151), known as the Professional Engineers
and Professional Land Surveyors Registration Law, and thereby
established licensing requirements for professional geologists;
and
WHEREAS, Due to the passage of the licensure requirements,
Pennsylvania's licensed professional geologists are required to
meet the stringent education, experience and professional
examination requirements established by the State Registration
Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists
and adhere to a strict code of ethics; and
WHEREAS, There are currently approximately 2,300 active
licensed professional geologists engaging in the practice of
geology in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Licensed professional geologists serve the public by
contributing knowledge, experience and integrity to exploration
and development of natural resources, design and construction of
public and private engineering projects, study and mitigation of
geologic hazards and environmental contamination, development of
technical regulations and standards and the education of future

geologists; and
WHEREAS, All over the world, the first Sunday in April is
used to thank geologists for the important work that they do;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April
5, 2020, as "Geologists Day" in Pennsylvania.
