A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the legacy of the United States Navy submarine USS
Pittsburgh after decades of commissioned service and marking
her decommissioning.
WHEREAS, The USS Pittsburgh has attained distinction as an
asset of the silent service, the United States Navy submarine
force; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh is the fourth United States Navy vessel
named in honor of the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, For 35 years, Pittsburgh has conducted warfare
operations and made port calls around the world; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's keel laying was observed April 15,
1983; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's sponsor, Dr. Carol Sawyer, joined the
commanding officer and crew for the submarine's launch, December
8, 1984; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's commissioning ceremony was held

November 23, 1985, at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton,
Connecticut; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh was deployed to theaters in Europe, the
Middle East, Africa and the Mediterranean; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's combat history includes coordinating
with USS Louisville to carry out Tomahawk missile strikes
against Iraq on April 2, 1991, as part of Operation Desert
Storm; and
WHEREAS, During a Mediterranean Sea deployment from October
2002 through April 2003, Pittsburgh launched Tomahawk missiles
as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
WHEREAS, In 2017, Pittsburgh completed her 1,000th dive, an
achievement few vessels carry; and
WHEREAS, In 2019, Pittsburgh attained further distinction as
the first submarine of her type to complete an Arctic transit;
and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh native Cmdr. Jason Deichler and crew
members made the Arctic transit, Pittsburgh's final journey,
leaving Naval Submarine Base New London and arriving at Naval
Base Kitsap-Bremerton; and
WHEREAS, The United States Navy has formally decommissioned
Pittsburgh, ending her unique role within the silent service;
and
WHEREAS, All personnel have proudly executed their duties and
fully accepted the dangers and demands of submarine warfare in
maritime regions across the globe; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
legacy of the United States Navy submarine USS Pittsburgh after
decades of commissioned service and mark her decommissioning.
