A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the year 2020 as the "Year of the Nurse and Midwife"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Established in 1903, the Pennsylvania State Nurses
Association has been essential in advocating, leading, educating
and connecting nurses to improve the health of patients in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Nurses and midwives are at the cornerstone of the
public health infrastructure, providing specialist care and
educating communities on disease prevention and health
promotion; and
WHEREAS, In every setting, midwife-led maternity care results
in reduced infant and maternal mortality and morbidity, fewer
medical interventions and decreased costs; and
WHEREAS, There are more than 192,000 registered nurses in
this Commonwealth, in addition to more than 700 nurse-midwives
and 12,082 certified registered nurse practitioners; and

WHEREAS, Nurses are often the first and sometimes only health
professional that people see, and the quality of their initial
assessments, treatment and managed personal care is vital; and
WHEREAS, Nurses and midwives are also part of their local
community and can shape and deliver effective interventions to
meet the needs of patients, families and communities; and
WHEREAS, "National Midwifery Week" is held during the first
full week of October each year to celebrate and recognize
midwives and midwife-led care; and
WHEREAS, "National Nurses Week" is held May 6 through May 12
each year, in conjunction with Florence Nightingale's birthday,
to honor nurses for their tireless work and educate the public
about nurses' roles in health care; and
WHEREAS, The year 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of the
birth of Florence Nightingale; and
WHEREAS, Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of
modern nursing, and her innovative approach to nursing
transformed and defined the nursing profession; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the essential role that nurses and
midwives have in bringing health care services to everyone, and
to honor the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale,
the World Health Organization has designated the year 2020 as
the "Year of the Nurse and Midwife"; and
WHEREAS, Nursing and midwifery remain at the frontline of
care to this day, whether in hospitals, long-term care nursing
facilities, health clinics or other care facilities; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is proud to recognize and honor the
service of nurses and midwives to this Commonwealth; therefore
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

year 2020 as the "Year of the Nurse and Midwife" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
crucial contribution of the nursing and midwifery professions to
health systems and the health of the people they serve.
