A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of November 2019 as "Long-Term Care
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and urging all
Pennsylvanians to examine their long-term care needs.
WHEREAS, Approximately 70% of individuals who are 65 years of
age or older will require some type of long-term care service
during their lifetime, and more than 40% will need care in a
nursing home for some period of time; and
WHEREAS, This year, approximately 9 million Americans who are
65 years of age or older will need long-term care services, and
by 2020 that number will increase to 12 million; and
WHEREAS, While most people who need long-term care are 65
years of age or older, nearly 40% of people currently receiving
long-term care are adults between 18 and 65 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Many of those people may be unfamiliar with the
limits on the long-term care benefits offered by Medicare and

private insurance providers; and
WHEREAS, Based on the most recent national average, one year
of care in a nursing home costs more than $100,000 for a
semiprivate room; and
WHEREAS, One year of care at home, assuming the need for
periodic personal care help from a home health aide, would cost
nearly $48,000 a year; and
WHEREAS, On average, an individual who is 65 years of age
will need some long-term care services for three years; and
WHEREAS, Service and support needs vary from one individual
to the next and can change over time; and
WHEREAS, Women often need care for longer periods of time
than men; and
WHEREAS, While approximately one-third of individuals who are
65 years of age may never need long-term care services, 20% will
need care for more than five years; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has the third-oldest population in
the nation and the population of individuals who are 85 years of
age or older is quickly increasing; and
WHEREAS, The Commonwealth currently spends approximately $7.5
billion annually for long-term care services and this amount
will continue to increase as the elderly population grows;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of November 2019 as "Long-Term Care Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania and urge all Pennsylvanians to examine their long-
term care needs.
