A RESOLUTION
Urging the State Board of Education to review the current
medical and educational research relating to the amount of
time needed by students in elementary and middle schools for
research and how recess periods affect test scores.
WHEREAS, Studies show that recess periods during the school
day for students in elementary and middle schools improve
cognitive function and reduce behavioral problems; and
WHEREAS, Some states have enacted laws to mandate recess
periods for students in elementary and middle schools because of
the benefits of recess to the students' physical and mental
health; and
WHEREAS, The Commonwealth should review the research on the
issue of research time and recess for students in elementary and
middle schools; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the State
Board of Education to review the current medical and educational
research relating to the amount of time needed by students in
elementary and middle schools for research and how recess
periods affect test scores and report its findings to the
