A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of November 2019 as "Veteran Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania in conjunction with the annual
"Veterans Day" observance on November 11, 2019.
WHEREAS, The history of the United States Armed Forces is
long and decorated, with tens of millions of Americans having
served across multiple generations; and
WHEREAS, The officers, enlisted soldiers and volunteer
soldiers of the Continental Army proved that Americans can be
victorious in battle; and
WHEREAS, On December 26, 1776, General George Washington led
Continental Army troops across the Delaware River to achieve a
decisive victory in the Battle of Trenton; and
WHEREAS, Woodrow Wilson, in an address delivered on the 125th
anniversary of the Battle of Trenton, appropriately referred to
Revolutionary War observer Thomas Paine's declaration: "These
are the times that try men's souls"; and

WHEREAS, Wilsonian idealism highlighted the preservation of
liberty and self-government and the imprint of those who "seek
honor by seeking service"; and
WHEREAS, To commemorate the end of World War I and the
fidelity and sacrifice of those who served, Woodrow Wilson
established "Armistice Day" on November 11, 1919; and
WHEREAS, In 1978, after changes in the date and official
name, the Congress of the United States declared that "Veterans
Day" be held each year on November 11; and
WHEREAS, "Veterans Day" casts light on the experiences and
and legacy of veterans; and
WHEREAS, "Veterans Day" reminds us of our shared
responsibilities on behalf of veterans, their protections and
rights and the expanded duties and unique ranks that have
evolved; and
WHEREAS, Recognition of veterans' service reinforces their
relationships with active military personnel, other veterans and
residents of our communities; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of November 2019 as "Veteran Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania in conjunction with the annual "Veterans Day"
observance on November 11, 2019; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage schools
in this Commonwealth to host "Meet a Veteran Day" and conduct
instruction on American Flag etiquette and other patriotic
exercises; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge residents
of this Commonwealth to consistently engage and support veterans
while learning from their brave service.
