A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New
York City.
WHEREAS, In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police
led a raid at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar located in
the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City; and
WHEREAS, During the raid on the Stonewall Inn, its customers
fought back in protest and were joined by crowds of local
sympathizers outside the bar; and
WHEREAS, The uprising at the Stonewall Inn ignited a five-day
series of protests; and
WHEREAS, Among the protesters were two transgender women of
color, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who are considered
pioneers of the LGBTQ movement; and
WHEREAS, The events of the morning of June 28, 1969, and the
days that followed, galvanized political activism not only at

home in the United States but globally, and led to the formation
of the first LGBTQ organizations, including the Gay Liberation
Front, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD and PFLAG; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, the Stonewall Inn and the surrounding area
was designated a national monument in recognition of the site's
significant contributions; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City.
