A RESOLUTION
Designating July 10, 2019, as "Chronic Disease Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, According to the United States Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, one in four Americans has multiple
chronic conditions that last a year or more and require ongoing
medical attention or limit activities of daily living; and
WHEREAS, The prevalence of multiple chronic conditions
increases dramatically with age, affecting three in four
Americans 65 years of age or older; and
WHEREAS, Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer
and diabetes, are the leading causes of death and disability in
the United States and the leading drivers of the nation's $3.8
trillion in annual health care costs; and
WHEREAS, The rapidly growing population of older adults,
increasing life expectancy associated with advances in public
health and clinical medicine and high prevalence of some risk

factors such as tobacco use and physical inactivity increase the
number of Americans suffering from multiple chronic conditions;
and
WHEREAS, People with multiple chronic conditions account for
the majority of clinician visits, home health visits and
inpatient stays; and
WHEREAS, Multiple chronic conditions cause substantial out-
of-pocket costs of medical care, including higher costs for
prescription drugs; and
WHEREAS, Sixty-five percent of people with chronic conditions
are unemployed or not working, forcing them to choose between
affording everyday necessities, such as food, and their medical
treatments; and
WHEREAS, People with multiple chronic conditions are at
greater risk of poor day-to-day functioning, with some type of
activity limitation, including difficulty walking, dressing,
bathing or preparing meals; and
WHEREAS, Managing multiple chronic conditions can require a
great deal of time and effort on the part of patients, families
or paid attendants providing health care assistance; therefore
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July
10, 2019, as "Chronic Disease Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage public
awareness of the risks of chronic disease and awareness of the
opportunities to extend the quality of life and lower health
care costs through preventative well-being practices.
