A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New
York City.
WHEREAS, In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police
led a raid at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar located in
the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City; and
WHEREAS, At a time when LGBTQ people were heavily
marginalized and discriminated against, gay bars were considered
places of refuge where individuals could openly socialize and
express themselves; and
WHEREAS, These bars were often targeted and penalized by
police as many bars in New York operated without liquor licenses
due to the New York State Liquor Authority's refusal to grant
licenses to those that served LGBTQ patrons; and
WHEREAS, When the police led their raid on the Stonewall Inn,
its customers fought back in protest and were joined by crowds
of local sympathizers outside the bar who objected to the
constant police harassment of New York's LGBTQ community; and

WHEREAS, The uprising at the Stonewall Inn ignited a five-day
series of protests that called attention to a group of people
who were denied basic civil rights; and
WHEREAS, Among the protesters were two transgender women of
color, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who are considered
pioneers of the LGBTQ movement; and
WHEREAS, The events of the morning of June 28, 1969, and the
days that followed, galvanized LGBTQ political activism not only
at home in the United States but globally and led to the
formation of the first LGBTQ organizations, including the Gay
Liberation Front, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD and PFLAG; and
WHEREAS, Over the past 50 years, the United States has made
significant progress toward ensuring equal rights for LGBTQ
Americans, including freedom from discrimination, protection
from hate crimes and the right to marry; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, President Barack Obama designated the
Stonewall Inn and the surrounding area a national monument in
recognition of the site's significant contribution to LGBTQ and
human rights; and
WHEREAS, This June, as the LGBTQ community observes "Pride
Month," the courage and conviction of those who took a stand at
the Stonewall Inn 50 years ago are being remembered and honored
as we celebrate the progress that has been made and acknowledge
the work toward absolute equality that lies ahead; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives continue to work
toward ensuring that all residents of this Commonwealth are

treated with equal respect and dignity and recognize that LGBTQ
rights are human rights.
