A RESOLUTION
Designating June 24, 2019, as "Cystinuria Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Cystinuria is a rare, inherited disorder
characterized by high urinary levels of undissolved cystine, a
stone-forming amino acid; and
WHEREAS, Defective cystine metabolism causes recurrent
kidney, ureter and bladder stones; and
WHEREAS, Onset generally occurs before a person has reached
20 years of age; and
WHEREAS, An estimated 1 in every 10,000 Americans are
genetically at risk; and
WHEREAS, There are 30 reported cases in this Commonwealth;
and
WHEREAS, Nausea, vomiting, urinary tract obstruction or
infection and waves of intense pain known as renal colic are
symptoms of the disorder; and

WHEREAS, Hypertension, renal insufficiency and renal failure
requiring dialysis or kidney transplant are life-threatening
complications; and
WHEREAS, Repeated surgeries and other stone removal
procedures may be needed to preserve kidney function; and
WHEREAS, The high number of medically necessary procedures
and hospitalizations impacts physical and mental health-related
quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Pain and functional impairment are other persistent
challenges; and
WHEREAS, University of Pennsylvania health care professionals
and research specialists are advancing our understanding of
cystinuria; and
WHEREAS, The Section of Medical Genetics of the University of
Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine has long
contributed to research on canine cystinuria types I, II and
III; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives calls for well-
supported funding for cystinuria research; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives commends cystinuria
research networks for their active role in advancing treatment
options and addressing quality of life; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June
24, 2019, as "Cystinuria Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
