A RESOLUTION
Designating May 4, 2019, as "Forgotten Cemetery Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, There are many graveyards and cemeteries in this
Commonwealth that, despite having historical significance, over
time have become forgotten; and
WHEREAS, One of these cemeteries is the Hayti Cemetery near
Old Marple Road in Marple Township, Delaware County; and
WHEREAS, The cemetery was founded in 1838 and located next to
an African-American church, known as the Hayti Church, which
burned to the ground in the early 1900s; and
WHEREAS, Many of the grave markers consist of rough stones
taken from a nearby quarry, apparently due to families of the
deceased not having enough money to afford masonry-carved
headstones; and
WHEREAS, It is believed that Hayti Cemetery is also the
resting place of several Civil War soldiers; and
WHEREAS, The Hayti Cemetery was abandoned in the 1930s;
