A RESOLUTION
Designating May 11, 2019, as "National Association of Letter
Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, On May 11, 2019, the National Association of Letter
Carriers will be conducting its 27th annual Letter Carriers'
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive to combat hunger in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, The Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive,
held annually on the second Saturday in May, is the country's
largest single-day food drive; and
WHEREAS, On May 11, 2019, letter carriers in more than 10,000
cities and towns across the United States will collect
nonperishable food donations as they deliver mail along their
postal routes; and
WHEREAS, Each year, with the help of volunteers, donations
are delivered to food banks, pantries and shelters that serve

the area where the donations are collected; and
WHEREAS, The summer months are a particularly critical time,
when donations and supplies are low and school lunch programs
are not available for local youths; and
WHEREAS, Postal customers are encouraged to participate by
leaving donations of nonperishable goods in paper bags by their
mailboxes on May 11, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Partners of the Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger
Food Drive include the United States Postal Service, the
National Rural Letter Carriers' Association, the United Way, the
United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, the AFL-
CIO, Valpak, Valassis and local food pantries; and
WHEREAS, According to the United States Department of
Agriculture, more than 15 million households in the United
States faced food insecurity at some point during 2017, which
represents 11.8% of all American households; and
WHEREAS, Approximately one in six American households,
including nearly 49 million citizens, 13 million of which are
children and about 5 million of which are senior citizens, do
not have enough food to eat; and
WHEREAS, In 2018, letter carriers collected approximately 71
million pounds of food, which is the 15th consecutive year the
effort has exceeded 70 million pounds; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the nationwide food drive has
collected and delivered more than 1.6 billion pounds of food to
help hungry families; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 11,
2019, as "National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out
Hunger Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the National Association of Letter Carriers

and its cosponsors be commended for their humanitarian efforts
to stamp out hunger; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the residents of this Commonwealth be
commended for their past participation in the Letter Carriers'
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive and be encouraged to contribute to
this year's effort to feed the hungry.
