A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 12 through 18, 2019, as "National
Women's Lung Health Week" in Pennsylvania and encouraging all
residents of this Commonwealth to learn more about the
detection and treatment of lung cancer.
WHEREAS, According to the American Lung Association, every
five minutes a woman in the United States learns that she has
lung cancer; and
WHEREAS, More than half of all people diagnosed with lung
cancer will die within one year of their diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, While the lung cancer death rate among men has
decreased 29% in the last 39 years, it has increased 102% among
women; and
WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women
and men in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Lung cancer must be a national priority due to it
having the third highest incidence rate and the lowest survival

rate among cancers; and
WHEREAS, Awareness, early detection and treatment are crucial
in the prevention or reduction of the spread of lung cancer and
lung disease in this country; and
WHEREAS, The American Lung Association's LUNG FORCE
initiative seeks to increase women's awareness of lung cancer as
the number one cancer killer and save lives through risk
reduction, early detection and new treatment options; and
WHEREAS, Through public awareness, this Commonwealth seeks to
minimize the devastating effects of lung cancer among
Pennsylvania residents; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of May 12 through 18, 2019, as "National Women's Lung
Health Week" in Pennsylvania and encourage all residents of this
Commonwealth to learn more about the detection and treatment of
lung cancer.
