A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and service of Milan Barber, who gave his life
protecting others, and extending condolences to his family.
WHEREAS, Milan Barber was born in Steelton in 1920 to Serbian
immigrants who came through Ellis Island in 1910; and
WHEREAS, He enlisted in the United States Navy the day after
Pearl Harbor was attacked and served as a machinist's mate on
the naval destroyer U.S.S. Henry A. Wiley; and
WHEREAS, The destroyer and its crew made many contributions
to the South Pacific Campaign, including a critical supporting
role in the Battle of Iwo Jima; and
WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Barber spent time as an
instructor of engine room mechanics at the United States Naval
Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; and
WHEREAS, He later became a police officer for the borough of
Minersville, Schuylkill County; and

WHEREAS, While on the night shift of June 19, 1970, Officer
Barber and his partner observed an individual trying to steal a
vehicle at Rothermel's Dairy; and
WHEREAS, As they attempted to arrest the suspect, a struggle
ensued and Officer Barber was overpowered; and
WHEREAS, Officer Barber suffered a fatal heart attack and
passed away that night; and
WHEREAS, He was the only officer to die in the line of duty
in the history of the Minersville Borough Police Department; and
WHEREAS, In 2017, Officer Barber received a Congressional
Commendation with his story entered into the Congressional
Record on March 9, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Also that year, his name was engraved on the
National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC;
and
WHEREAS, Officer Barber's photo and story is on display at
the National Law Enforcement Museum's Hall of Remembrance in
Washington, DC; and
WHEREAS, Officer Barber's name will also be engraved on the
Memorial Wall of the American Police Hall of Fame in Titusville,
Florida; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
and service of Milan Barber, who gave his life protecting
others, and extend condolences to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
Officer Barber's family in Minersville, Pennsylvania.
