A RESOLUTION
Recommending the Department of Corrections provide
identification badges for corrections officers.
WHEREAS, Corrections officers encounter safety risks on a
daily basis while overseeing inmates in Department of
Corrections facilities; and
WHEREAS, Corrections officers encounter safety risks while
working to reduce criminal behavior in our communities; and
WHEREAS, Without regard for their safety and often without
adequate identification, corrections officers stop bank
robberies, rescue children from burning houses and assist local
police in capturing suspects at large; and
WHEREAS, As essential employees, corrections officers require
access despite road and facility closures during a state of
emergency; and
WHEREAS, There is no standard identification badge to quickly
convey an individual's status as a corrections officer to
emergency services providers, law enforcement personnel or
certain other corrections officers; and

WHEREAS, An appropriate identification badge indicating an
individual's status as a corrections officer would protect an
officer who intervenes in a criminal or noncriminal incident or
an emergency situation; and
WHEREAS, An appropriate identification badge indicating an
individual's status as a corrections officer would establish an
officer's credentials for travel or access as needed; and
WHEREAS, Thirty-two states provide identification badges to
corrections officers; and
WHEREAS, Department of Corrections identification badges
would facilitate the preparedness and professional conduct of
corrections officers and ensure their safety in the face of
dangers in the workplace, at crime scenes and at emergency
scenes; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recommend the
Department of Corrections provide identification badges for
corrections officers.
