A RESOLUTION
Designating March 27, 2019, as "Pennsylvania Female Veterans
Day."
WHEREAS, Women have a long history of heroic and often
unrecognized service on behalf of all branches of the armed
forces; and
WHEREAS, Before integration, women's military involvement
centered on nursing and clerical positions; and
WHEREAS, Some women disguised themselves as men in order to
serve on the front lines in early American history; and
WHEREAS, The first military enlistments of women occurred
during the World War I era; and
WHEREAS, The Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948
authorized enlistment and appointment of women as full members
of the armed forces with veterans benefits; and

WHEREAS, The first female graduates of the Virginia Military
Institute and the Citadel, first female fighter pilots flying
combat missions in Iraq and first woman to command a United
States naval ship represent some landmark achievements by women
in the last two decades; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, Air Force General Lori Robinson was the
first woman to lead a unified combatant command and the highest-
ranking woman in United States military history; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, Army Captain Kristen Griest transferred
from military police to become the first female infantry officer
and Army Sergeant Shelby Atkins became the first female enlisted
infantry soldier; and
WHEREAS, In 2017, the first three women in the Marine Corps
infantry were assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, as rifle,
machine gun and mortar specialists; and
WHEREAS, An estimated 2 million veterans of the armed forces,
or 9% of all veterans, are female; and
WHEREAS, More than 60,000 female veterans reside in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives recognizes women in the
military who, through their selfless and brave service, maintain
our national defense and protect our freedoms; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives gratefully acknowledges
the experience and contribution of female veterans throughout
our Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
27, 2019, as "Pennsylvania Female Veterans Day"; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Pennsylvania Commission for Women.
