A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of February 10 through 16, 2019, as
"Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes Awareness Week" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, February is American Heart Month; and
WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
reports that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of
women and men in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and
stroke, are the nation's leading cause of death and disability,
with more than 1 million Americans suffering a new or recurrent
coronary attack each year and more than 795,000 suffering a new
or recurrent stroke; and
WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death
associated with diabetes due to complications of diabetes, such
as high blood sugar, high blood pressure and obesity; and

WHEREAS, In the United States, two out of three deaths of
people with type 2 diabetes are attributed to cardiovascular
disease; and
WHEREAS, Findings from a recent study revealed 52% of adults
living with type 2 diabetes are unaware that they are at an
increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease; and
WHEREAS, The total health care costs for the treatment of
diabetes were reported to be approximately $245 billion
annually, with direct medical costs accounting for $176 billion
of the total costs in 2013, and cardiovascular disease
accounting for 28% of costs for treating diabetes patients; and
WHEREAS, Appropriate awareness and education about the
cardiovascular risks associated with diabetes can effectively
improve outcomes and reduce the overall financial burden of this
illness; and
WHEREAS, The Department of Health and other relevant partners
seek to promote awareness, education and action related to
diabetes and its link to cardiovascular disease; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of February 10 through 16, 2019, as "Cardiovascular Disease
and Diabetes Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and encourage
others to promote education and awareness of the connection
between cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
