AN ACT
Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
act relating to the public school system, including certain
provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
laws relating thereto," in terms and courses of study,
further providing for days schools not to be kept open.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Section 1502(a) of the act of March 10, 1949
(P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is
amended to read:
Section 1502. Days Schools not to be Kept Open.--(a) Except
as provided in subsection (c), no school shall be kept open on
any Saturday for the purpose of ordinary instruction, except
when Monday is fixed by the board of school directors as the
weekly holiday, or on Sunday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July,
Christmas, Thanksgiving, the First of January, Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day and up to five additional days designated as local
holidays in the adopted school calendar by the board of school

directors as official local school district holidays, nor shall
any school be kept open in any district during the time of
holding the teachers' institute for such district. The board of
school directors may cancel any day designated as a local
holiday in the event of a weather emergency or natural disaster.

Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
