A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of October 2018 as "Chiropractic Health
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania-licensed Doctors of Chiropractic are
physician-level providers who focus on the whole person in their
"Conservative Care First" approaches to pain management and
health care; and
WHEREAS, Doctors of Chiropractic have particular expertise in
the prevention, care and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal
injuries and conditions; and
WHEREAS, Chiropractors recognize through research and
clinical experience that a sedentary lifestyle can diminish
joint health, wellness and longevity; and
WHEREAS, It is widely proven that physical activity reduces
the risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and even
some cancers while strengthening our bones and muscles and
reducing the incidence of low-back pain; and
WHEREAS, Low-back pain, one of the most common

musculoskeletal conditions, is the single leading cause of
disability worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Years lived with disability caused by low-back pain
have increased worldwide by 54% between 1999 and 2015, primarily
because of the increase and aging of the population; and
WHEREAS, Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the
safest nondrug, noninvasive therapies available for the
effective nonopioid treatment of low-back pain and other
musculoskeletal complaints; and
WHEREAS, The American College of Physicians' low-back pain
treatment guidelines released in 2017 promote the use of
noninvasive, nondrug treatments such as spinal manipulation as a
first line of defense against back pain; and
WHEREAS, Groups such as the Joint Commission and the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention promote the use of
nonpharmacologic approaches for pain treatment before drugs and
surgery; and
WHEREAS, The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has
declared the month of October 2018 to be "National Chiropractic
Health Month"; and
WHEREAS, For "National Chiropractic Health Month," the ACA
and its members encourage the public to "Move 4 Life" to improve
and maintain their musculoskeletal and overall health; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing "National Chiropractic Health Month" in
this Commonwealth serves as a reminder to all residents that
noninvasive and nondrug treatments for low-back pain, such as
chiropractic services or spinal manipulation, combined with an
active and healthy lifestyle may lessen or eliminate the need
for riskier, potentially addictive treatments, such as
prescription opioid pain medications, and may keep individuals

healthier and active into their senior years; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2018
as "Chiropractic Health Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the efforts of the
American Chiropractic Association to promote the benefits of
movement through the "Move 4 Life" campaign.
