A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of October 2018 as "National Disability
Employment Awareness Month"; and designating the month of
October 2018 as "Disability Employment Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "National Disability Employment Awareness Month" is
observed in October each year; and
WHEREAS, During "National Disability Employment Awareness
Month," a nationwide campaign raises awareness about disability
employment issues and honors the many contributions of workers
with disabilities in the United States; and
WHEREAS, The observance of "National Disability Employment
Awareness Month" promotes positive employment outcomes for
individuals with disabilities and endeavors to expand ideas
about what youths with disabilities can achieve when they
receive encouragement and support for their ambitions; and
WHEREAS, This observance aims to inspire employers to build
an inclusive workplace community; and
WHEREAS, "National Disability Employment Awareness Month"

traces its history to 1945, when the Congress of the United
States declared the first week in October each year "National
Employ the Physically Handicapped Week"; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, Congress directed the President's Committee
on National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week to work with
state and local authorities to promote job opportunities for the
physically handicapped; and
WHEREAS, In 1962, the committee was renamed the President's
Committee on Employment of the Handicapped to acknowledge the
needs and contributions of individuals with all types of
disabilities; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, Congress extended the observation from a
week to a month and adopted its current name; and
WHEREAS, More than 25 years after the signing of the
Americans with Disabilities Act, great progress has been made in
removing barriers to employment for individuals with
disabilities, yet further opportunities for progress exist; and
WHEREAS, The theme for 2018, which marks more than 70 years
since the first observance of "National Disability Employment
Awareness Month," is "America's Workforce: Empowering All"; and
WHEREAS, The theme was selected by the United States
Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy to
encourage workforce empowerment and the creation of jobs for all
Americans; and
WHEREAS, "National Disability Employment Awareness Month"
coincides with the national celebration of "Disability History
Month" during the third week of the month of October; and
WHEREAS, There is no equivalent to "National Disability
Employment Awareness Month" in this Commonwealth; therefore be
