A RESOLUTION
Designating June 6, 2018, as "Computer Science Education Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of Pennsylvania believe
that education in technology and specifically in computer
science are critical to this Commonwealth's financial future;
and
WHEREAS, Research shows that teaching computer science at the
elementary and secondary levels increases the number of students
who earn a degree in the field, with students who learn computer
science in high school being six times more likely to major in
it in college; and
WHEREAS, In the 2016-2017 school year, only 23% of all
Pennsylvania middle schools and high schools offered a computer
science course, and only 2.1% of Pennsylvania students in grades
7 through 12 enrolled in a computer science course; and
WHEREAS, There is a significant gap between the number of
computer science graduates and the number of new science,

technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs in
computing, with 58% of all new STEM jobs being in the computer
science field, but only 8% of STEM majors graduating with a
computer science degree suitable to fill those job vacancies;
and
WHEREAS, The evolution of technology has led to computing
occupations becoming the number one source of all new wages in
the United States, with Pennsylvania currently having nearly
20,000 open computing jobs; and
WHEREAS, The average salary for jobs in the computer science
field is $85,000, nearly double that of noncomputing jobs in
Pennsylvania; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 6, 2018, as
"Computer Science Education Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the immense value of
computer science education; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate applaud the efforts of all of those
who work to support and advocate for computer science education
in Pennsylvania.
