A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of April 2018 as "Jazz Appreciation Month"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM)," was created in 2001
at the Smithsonian Museum to celebrate the extraordinary
heritage and history of jazz music during the month of April;
and
WHEREAS, JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage
individuals of all ages to participate in the appreciation of
jazz music through study, concerts, recordings and books; and
WHEREAS, This year JAM is celebrating the music and
transformative role jazz music has in promoting social justice;
and
WHEREAS, This year JAM is commemorating jazz producer Norman
Granz, one of the most influential impresarios in the 20th
century jazz scene; and
WHEREAS, One of jazz's true giants, Norman Granz was born on
August 6, 1918, and died on November 22, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Norman Granz was the primary source for the
recording and dissemination of jazz from the 1940s to the 1980s;
and
WHEREAS, Norman Granz helped propel the career of many jazz
musicians, including Ella Fitzgerald; and
WHEREAS, Norman Granz's famous Jazz at the Philharmonic
concert series marked the shift of jazz performances from
nightclubs to concert halls and revolutionized the way audiences
listened to jazz music; and
WHEREAS, In 1956, Norman Granz founded Verve Records, which
captured some of the finest jazz performances ever recorded; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his contributions to jazz music,
Norman Granz devoted his life to fighting for civil rights and
equality; and
WHEREAS, During times of high racial tensions, Norman Granz
wrote nondiscrimination clauses into all of his musicians'
contracts and emphasized the need for musicians to perform at
integrated concerts; and
WHEREAS, Jazz music is part of the rich and diverse musical
history of this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of April 2018
as "Jazz Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania and the
contributions of Norman Granz who, in bringing jazz to audiences
around the world, defied racial and social predjudice.
