A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of April 8 through 14, 2018, as "National
Library Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, This year "National Library Week" will mark the 60th
anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958; and
WHEREAS, In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans
were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and
musical instruments; and
WHEREAS, Concerned that citizens were reading less, the
American Library Association and the American Book Publishers
formed a nonprofit citizens' organization with the goal of
encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time to
improve income and develop strong and healthy family life; and
WHEREAS, Sixty years later, our country continues to
celebrate "National Library Week" and the valuable contributions
of the various libraries, librarians and staff and the services
and resources they provide to people of all ages; and

WHEREAS, Libraries open a world of possibilities and are
credited with providing the fuel to move Pennsylvanians forward;
and
WHEREAS, The 2018 theme, "Libraries Lead," illustrates that
libraries and librarians help individuals, communities and
schools find the resources they need to help people accomplish
their goals and dreams; and
WHEREAS, This is especially true since libraries have
transformed with the times and are no longer just facilities
that house books; and
WHEREAS, Today libraries offer access to such things as
technology and digital resources, workforce programs, homework
help, nutrition and physical activities, registration for health
care and life-planning seminars, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, Democracy and social change are also supported by
libraries through their commitment to provide equitable access
to information for all users regardless of race, ethnicity,
creed, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or
socioeconomic status; and
WHEREAS, During "National Library Week" people nationwide are
encouraged to visit a library and make it known how their local
libraries have led them in a positive direction; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of April 8
through 14, 2018, as "National Library Week" in Pennsylvania.
