A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of October 2017 as "Polish American
Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, This year marks the 36th anniversary of "Polish
American Heritage Month" and the 409th anniversary of Polish
settlers arriving in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Individuals of Polish heritage have contributed
greatly to global advancement and the growth of the United
States and Pennsylvania in particular in the more than 400 years
since the first Polish immigrants settled here; and
WHEREAS, Polish notables include Ignacy Jan Paderewski, one
of the most famous and popular pianists of all time and an
advocate for Polish freedom, who was born more than 150 years
ago in Warsaw and who died in 1941 in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Individuals of Polish heritage have demonstrated
exceptional skills in a vast array of professional fields; and
WHEREAS, Individuals of Polish heritage will mark the 238th
anniversary of the death of General Casimir Pulaski, "Father of

the American Cavalry," and the 106th anniversary of Marie
Sklodowska Curie's receipt of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for
her discovery of radioactive elements polonium and radium; and
WHEREAS, Polish individuals are recognized for their strong
work ethic and outstanding achievements; and
WHEREAS, Other Polish notables include Revolutionary War hero
Thaddeus Kosciuszko, renowned international conductor Leopold
Stokowski, former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski
and former United States Senator Edmund Muskie; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians of Polish heritage have made many
contributions to our nation; and
WHEREAS, These Pennsylvanians include Cardinal John Krol of
Philadelphia, baseball great Stan Musial of Donora and singer
Bobby Vinton of Canonsburg; and
WHEREAS, Individuals of Polish heritage have many reasons to
be proud and celebrate their heritage and culture and the
achievements of their people; and
WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians are grateful for the many
contributions of Poland and its citizens to our Commonwealth;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2017
as "Polish American Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania.
