A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2017 as "Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless
of age, heritage or medical history; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, a woman's
risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime
is 1 in 75; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer
among women; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer
death among women; and
WHEREAS, Approximately one-half of women with ovarian cancer
are 63 years of age or older; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
will be approximately 22,440 new cases of ovarian cancer and
that 14,080 women will die from ovarian cancer in the United

States in 2017; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 15% of ovarian cancers are detected at
an early stage; and
WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival;
and
WHEREAS, Nine out of ten women treated for early ovarian
cancer will live longer than five years after diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education are important
factors in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
2017 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
