A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Croydon
Fire Company No. 1 in Bristol Township, Bucks County,
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The Croydon Fire Company was founded in 1918 as the
Croydon Improvement Association, which was formed to offer fire
protection and improve the condition of the Croydon section of
Bristol Township; and
WHEREAS, One of the first pieces of firefighting apparatus
purchased by the association, an 1847 John Clayton hand-drawn
horse cart, is still on display in the company's firehouse; and
WHEREAS, In 1924, the company received its charter as a
volunteer fire company and the name was changed to the Croydon
Fire Company; and
WHEREAS, The company's first firehouse was erected in the
1920s; and
WHEREAS, The firehouse was enlarged in 1941 with an engine

room which contained three bays capable of holding two
apparatuses each; and
WHEREAS, Due to the company's proximity to the Delaware River
and the Neshaminy Creek, a decision was made early on to obtain
a boat for water rescues; and
WHEREAS, The Croydon Fire Company, the Goodwill Hose Company
of Bristol and the Bucks County Rescue Squad joined together in
1941 to form the Interstate Marine Association; and
WHEREAS, During the Great Flood of 1956, the company rescued
residents from their homes as far north as Yardley,
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The firehouse was expanded during a 1997 renovation
which included the construction of five additional bays, new
offices, a training room and a bunk room; and
WHEREAS, As volunteer fire companies across this Commonwealth
struggle with fundraising and recruiting, it is important to
acknowledge the tremendous sacrifice these volunteers make to
serve their communities; and
WHEREAS, After 100 years, the volunteers of the Croydon Fire
Company continue to put their lives on the line in service to
their community every day; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
100th anniversary of the founding of the Croydon Fire Company
No. 1 in Bristol Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
