A RESOLUTION
Honoring Camp Letterman.
WHEREAS, In July of 1863, it was ordered that an official
United State general hospital be opened in Gettysburg on land
owned by George Wolf and located approximately half of a mile
from the Gettysburg battlefield; and
WHEREAS, The general hospital, the first to be placed on the
battlefield was named Camp Letterman after Dr. Jonathan
Letterman the medical director of the Army of the Potomac; and
WHEREAS, Established near a railroad station for ease of
movement of incoming medical supplies and wounded soldiers, Camp
Letterman was located on what is now the York Pike and was the
largest field hospital in North America; and
WHEREAS, The hospital was established to treat both Union and
Confederate soldiers that were unable to be transferred to other
general hospitals; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Henry Janes was in charge of the general

hospital and kept careful notes of each patient treated; and
WHEREAS, The camp remained open and treated soldiers until
November 20, 1863; and
WHEREAS, The camp treated more than 4,000 patients; and
WHEREAS, Three hundred sixty-five soldiers, forty of which
resided in this Commonwealth, died at Camp Letterman; and
WHEREAS, The next year, the Union soldiers buried at the camp
were removed and reburied in the Gettysburg National Cemetery
and the Confederate soldiers were removed and reburied in the
1870s; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Camp
Letterman.
