A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood
in northern France, where Allied forces engaged German Army
units for more than three weeks in a pivotal event during
World War I.
WHEREAS, The Battle of Belleau Wood began when newly serving
United States ground units were drawn into sustained combat
against five divisions of well-placed, seasoned German fighters
who had penetrated French lines; and
WHEREAS, The Battle of Belleau Wood occurred during the
waning period of the German Spring Offensive of 1918, a campaign
to defeat the French and British armies along the Western Front
before United States combat forces entered in large numbers; and
WHEREAS, The United States 23rd Infantry Regiment, the 1st
Battalion, the 5th Marine Regiment and an element of the 6th
Machine Gun Battalion had marched more than six miles to enter
Belleau Wood on June 1, 1918; and
