A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 120th anniversary of the Battle of Manila Bay.
WHEREAS, The Battle of Manila Bay took place on May 1, 1898,
in the Philippines; and
WHEREAS, At the Battle of Manila Bay, the United States
Asiatic Squadron destroyed the Spanish Pacific fleet in the
first major battle of the Spanish-American War; and
WHEREAS, Commodore George Dewey, who was in command of the
Unites States Asiatic Squadron anchored north of Hong Kong, was
ordered to capture and destroy the Spanish Pacific fleet; and
WHEREAS, On April 30, 1898, Commodore Dewey's lookouts caught
sight of Luzon, the main Philippine island, and under the cover
of darkness, the United States Asiatic Squadron slipped by the
defensive guns of Corregidor Island and into Manila Bay; and
WHEREAS, After dawn, the United State Asiatic Squadron
located the Spanish Pacific fleet, which was out of date in
comparison to the well-armed and well-staffed American ships;
