A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of April 9 through 13, 2018, as "Local
Government Week" and April 11, 2018, as "Local Government
Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Local government in Pennsylvania is a mosaic of more
than 4,500 individual units with 67 counties, more than 50
cities, nearly 1,500 townships of the second class, nearly 100
townships of the first class, more than 950 boroughs, one
incorporated town, more than 500 school districts and more than
1,500 municipal authorities; and
WHEREAS, More than 12 million residents of this Commonwealth
rely on the services and facilities provided by local
government, ranging from the special purpose functions of
counties, school districts and municipal authorities in the
areas of judicial administration, social welfare, education and
provision of water and sewer services to the more general

purpose functions of cities, boroughs, towns and townships such
as maintenance of roads and streets, police and fire protection
and enforcement of ordinances and land use controls; and
WHEREAS, Local government comprises thousands of hardworking
citizen officials, many of whom hold local government offices
and serve without reward; and
WHEREAS, Local government also comprises thousands of
dedicated staff members who carry out the directives of the
local elected officials and who are supplemented by thousands of
tireless volunteers who serve on various local boards and
commissions; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth rely upon the
dedication of their local officials in meeting many of the
residents' most fundamental needs in nearly all facets of daily
living; and
WHEREAS, Local government is the backbone of our democracy
and the bedrock of our political system; and
WHEREAS, The success of our local officials is a key element
in the overall quality of life in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, It is fitting that each year in Pennsylvania one
week is set aside as "Local Government Week" and one day as
"Local Government Day"; and
WHEREAS, "Local Government Week" and "Local Government Day"
focus attention on the need for strong, independent and active
local government in this Commonwealth and recognize the valuable
contributions made by residents serving their communities;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of April 9 through 13, 2018, as "Local Government Week" and
April 11, 2018, as "Local Government Day" in Pennsylvania; and

be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend and thank
the local officials of this Commonwealth for their labor as the
unsung heroes of government.
