A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 175th anniversary of Carbon County.
WHEREAS, On March 13, 1843, Governor David Rittenhouse Porter
signed the historic act creating Carbon County from sections of
Northampton County and Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, Carbon County's name alludes to the deposits of
anthracite coal in the region; and
WHEREAS, The county seat was originally founded as Mauch
Chunk, a native American name meaning "bear mountain"; and
WHEREAS, Mauch Chunk was the company town of the Lehigh Coal
and Navigation Company; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, Mauch Chunk was renamed Jim Thorpe in honor
of the famous Native American athlete who is buried there; and
WHEREAS, Carbon County was home to the Switchback Railroad,
the country's first large-scale railway; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1827, the Switchback was first used to
carry coal and continued in operation through the 1930s as a

tourist attraction; and
WHEREAS, In Carbon County's first full year of operation, it
was home to 7,365 residents; and
WHEREAS, Today, Carbon County has grown to a population of
more than 63,000; and
WHEREAS, Carbon County is experiencing an increase in
population and industry primarily related to the westward
movement of the East Coast metropolitan area and the growth of
the Pocono Mountain region; and
WHEREAS, Carbon County is composed of 23 municipalities, 5
school districts and a countywide technical school; and
WHEREAS, Carbon County is known for its scenic mountains,
rivers and rural landscape that attract thousands of visitors
each year; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
175th anniversary of Carbon County.
