A RESOLUTION
Urging the Congress of the United States to pass H.R. 3045, the
Eastern Legacy Extension Act, and the President of the United
States to sign H.R. 3045 into law.
WHEREAS, The Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008
directed the Secretary of the Interior to complete a special
resource study of the eastern legacy sites associated with the
Lewis and Clark expedition to determine the suitability and
feasibility of adding these sites to the Lewis and Clark
National Historic Trail; and
WHEREAS, In conducting the study, the Secretary of the
Interior was required to analyze the potential impact that the
inclusion of the eastern legacy sites would have on tourism to
the western portion of the trail; and
WHEREAS, The National Park Service evaluated 25 trail
segments and several historic sites in the east related to the
Lewis and Clark expedition; and

WHEREAS, The National Park Service released a study
recommending three trail segments that were significant to Lewis
and Clark's considerable preparations before the "Corps of
Discovery" expedition began and submitted the study to the
Congress of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Congressman Messer introduced H.R. 3045, the Eastern
Legacy Extension Act, a bill that amends the National Trails
System Act to extend the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail
to 4,900 miles, from the Ohio River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
to the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the Congress of the United
States to pass H.R. 3045, the Eastern Legacy Extension Act, and
the President of the United States to sign H.R. 3045 into law;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
the President of the United States, to the presiding officers of
each chamber of Congress and to each member of Congress from
Pennsylvania.
