A RESOLUTION
Expressing unwavering support for the men and women of Team USA
participating in the XXIII Winter Olympic Games in
PyeongChang, Republic of Korea.
WHEREAS, PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea,
was selected to host the 2018 Olympic Winter Games by the 123rd
International Olympic Committee on July 6, 2011, the first time
the games will be held in the Republic of Korea since 1988 when
Seoul was the host city; and
WHEREAS, On November 1, 2017, the PyeongChang Olympic Torch
relay began a journey of 2,018 kilometers, winding its way
through nine provinces and eight major cities across the
Republic of Korea, with Incheon Metropolitan City providing the
starting point; and
WHEREAS, The torch measures 700 mm in length, reflecting
PyeongChang's altitude of 700 meters above sea level; and

WHEREAS, The PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games will be held
for 17 days from February 9 through 25, 2018; and
WHEREAS, PyeongChang will be the stage for the opening and
closing ceremonies and most snow sports, while alpine speed
events will take place in Jeongseon, and ice sports will be held
in the coastal city of Gangneung; and
WHEREAS, The vision of the games is for the world's best
athletes to compete on Asia's center stage to launch new
horizons in winter sports and create a sustainable legacy for
Gangwon Province and the Republic of Korea; and
WHEREAS, The official emblem of the games symbolizes a world
open to everyone, combining the image of ice and snow, winter
sports stars and people from all over the world, coming together
in PyeongChang, where heaven meets earth; and
WHEREAS, The official mascot of the games, Soohorang, is a
white tiger, which has been long considered Korea's guardian
animal; and
WHEREAS, "Sooho," meaning protection in Korean, symbolizes
protection offered to the athletes, spectators and other
participants; "rang" comes from the middle letter of "Ho-rang-
i," the Korean word for "tiger," and is also the last letter of
"Jeong-seon A-ri-rang," a cherished traditional folk song of
Gangwon Province; and
WHEREAS, Athletes from across the world will converge in
PyeongChang to compete in 102 events in 15 sport disciplines,
including: alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, cross-
country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey,
luge, Nordi combined, short track speedskating, skeleton, ski
jumping, snowboarding and speed skating; and
WHEREAS, Over 200 athletes from across the United States will

be traveling to PyeongChang to participate in the games,
including nine from this Commonwealth: Jamie Greubel Poser
(bobsled), Ryan Gunderson, Chad Kolarik, Brian O'Neill and Ryan
Zapolski (ice hockey), Summer Britcher, Andrew Sherk and Jayson
Terdiman (luge) and John-Henry Krueger (short track
speedskating); and
WHEREAS, The games will be the first ever to award over 100
gold medals to participants; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its
unwavering support for the men and women of Team USA as they
compete in the pinnacle of sporting events at the XXIII Winter
Olympic Games in PyeongChang, Republic of Korea; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its
support for, and commend the preparation of, the Winter Olympic
Games' host city, PyeongChang, the host province, Gangwon, and
the host country, the Republic of Korea, a longtime ally and
friend of the United States of America.
