A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of August 1 through 7, 2017, as "World
Breastfeeding Week" in Pennsylvania and supporting
breastfeeding as a way to enhance the well-being of all
individuals worldwide.
WHEREAS, "World Breastfeeding Week" was established and is
annually recognized by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding
Action; and
WHEREAS, The "World Breastfeeding Week's" 25th year in 2017
celebrates working together for the common good; and
WHEREAS, This year's theme is "Sustaining Breastfeeding
Together"; and
WHEREAS, The four thematic areas of "World Breastfeeding
Week" this year are:
(1) Nutrition, Food Security and Poverty Reduction.
(2) Survival, Health and Well-Being.
(3) Environment and Climate Change.
(4) Women's Productivity and Employment;

WHEREAS, Breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for infants
and contributes to their healthy growth and development; and
WHEREAS, Research suggests that breastfed babies have a lower
risk of acquiring the following:
(1) Asthma.
(2) Childhood leukemia.
(3) Childhood obesity.
(4) Ear infections.
(5) Lower respiratory infections.
(6) Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
(7) Type 2 diabetes;
and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding also improves the health and healing
of mothers following childbirth and leads to a lower risk of
acquiring the following:
(1) Type 2 diabetes.
(2) Certain types of breast cancer.
(3) Ovarian cancer;
and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding also leads to a more productive work
force as mothers who breastfeed miss less time from work to care
for sick infants than mothers who feed their infants formula;
and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding is a vital part of sustainable
development and a key contributor to the survival and health of
infants and mothers; and
WHEREAS, The protection, promotion and support of
breastfeeding is a collective societal responsibility shared by
all individuals; and

WHEREAS, It is important that this Commonwealth support
creating an enabling environment for women to breastfeed
successfully; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of August 1 through 7, 2017, as "World Breastfeeding Week"
in Pennsylvania and support breastfeeding as a way to enhance
the well-being of all individuals worldwide.
