INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
MAY 18, 2017
A RESOLUTION
Designating May 29, 2017, as "John F. Kennedy Day" in
Pennsylvania on the commemoration of his 100th birthday.
WHEREAS, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy served as the 35th
President of the United States; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy was the youngest President ever
elected; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy had decorated service in the
United States Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of
lieutenant, and received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, the
Purple Heart and the American Defense Service Medal; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy served as a member of the House of
Representatives of the United States for the Eleventh District
of Massachusetts for six years between 1947 and 1953; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy served as a United States Senator
from Massachusetts for seven years between 1953 and 1960; and

WHEREAS, When President Kennedy was inaugurated in 1961, he
sought to provide a check on the growing spread of communism and
fight for democracy during the Cold War; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy's resolute leadership during the
Cuban Missile Crisis averted a nuclear war with the Union of
Soviet Socialist Republics and prevented the placement of short-
range nuclear weapons near the United States; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy asked the nations of the world to
join together to fight the "common enemies of man: tyranny,
poverty, disease, and war itself"; and
WHEREAS, On January 20, 1961, President Kennedy motivated a
generation by inspiring them to "Ask not what your country can
do for you -- ask what you can do for your country"; and
WHEREAS, During his administration, President Kennedy worked
to develop the Peace Corps which calls on young Americans to
serve their country by promoting peace and working to improve
lives around the world; and
WHEREAS, To advance space exploration, President Kennedy
challenged Americans to win the Space Race by placing a man on
the moon before the close of the 1960s; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy
were lifelong supporters of the arts and the "contribution to
the human spirit"; and
WHEREAS, While in the White House, the Kennedys promoted
American history and culture through artists, writers,
scientists, poets and musicians and led efforts to expand the
National Cultural Center; and
WHEREAS, On November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was
assassinated as his motorcade traveled through Dealey Plaza,
Dallas, Texas; and

WHEREAS, After President Kennedy's assassination, Congress
redesignated the National Cultural Center as a living memorial,
creating the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; and
WHEREAS, President Kennedy's assassination was a tragedy that
was felt throughout the nation, but his legacy would lead
generations of Americans to work harder, strive farther and
achieve greater; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 29,
2017, as "John F. Kennedy Day" in Pennsylvania on the
commemoration of his 100th birthday.
