A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 20 through 26, 2017, as "National
Safe Boating Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Every year, Pennsylvanians take to the water on
various watercraft, from yachts on Lake Erie to one-person
kayaks on the many creeks and rivers in our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Safe boating practices are everyone's
responsibility; and
WHEREAS, The laws of this Commonwealth require anyone born
after January 1, 1982, to obtain a boating safety certificate to
operate a personal watercraft or a powerboat with a motor
greater than 25 horsepower; and
WHEREAS, Boating safety in Pennsylvania not only includes
safe operation of the vessel but also the use of life jackets;
and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission issued

14,892 new boating safety certificates in 2015; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania had 58 reportable recreational boating
accidents of all types in 2015, a decrease of 17% from 2014; and
WHEREAS, Only 4 of those 58 accidents resulted in fatalities,
well below the 10-year average of 13.4 victims; and
WHEREAS, During the week of May 20 through 26, boating groups
throughout Pennsylvania and the country are promoting boating
safety and wearing life jackets; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of May 20 through 26, 2017, as "National Safe Boating Week"
in Pennsylvania.
