A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 20th anniversary of the founding of the
Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monuments Project.
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monuments Project was
founded on April 20, 1997; and
WHEREAS, A reprinted Baltimore Sun news article in the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette served as the catalyst for the project,
which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for 146
Pennsylvania regimental monuments and markers on the field of
some of the worst fighting during the Civil War; and
WHEREAS, Representative Harry Readshaw established a group of
preservationists, fondly called "Readshaw's Raiders"; and
WHEREAS, Their unwritten plan gained support as a worthy
cause; and
WHEREAS, Various contributors donated money; and
WHEREAS, The oldest battlefield preservation organization in

the country provided nonprofit status; and
WHEREAS, Thousands of school students from all over this
Commonwealth joined in support, as did thousands of Civil War
reenactors, companies, corporations, preservation organizations
and individuals; and
WHEREAS, To raise additional funds for the cause, a
commemorative license plate was produced, authors donated their
book proceeds, and numerous sponsors conducted events, including
5K races, Civil War preservation balls and motorcycle rides for
preservation; and
WHEREAS, The Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association
website, www.gbpa.org, helps keep people informed on the status
of the project and offers a way to sell books, license plates
and shirts; and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly approved a Pennsylvania
monument vehicle registration plate in 2014; and
WHEREAS, More than 600 registration plates have been sold to
date, with the net proceeds going to a trust fund held by the
Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to provide grants
for Pennsylvania monument repair; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
20th anniversary of the founding of the Pennsylvania Gettysburg
Monuments Project.
