A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of February 26 through March 4, 2017, as
"Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Eating disorders, such as bulimia, binge eating
disorder and anorexia, are serious illnesses that involve
extreme emotions, attitudes and behaviors concerning food,
exercise and body image; and
WHEREAS, Contrary to common stereotypes, eating disorders
affect all kinds of individuals, regardless of gender,
ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, sexuality or background;
and
WHEREAS, Thirty million Americans will struggle with an
eating disorder at some point in their lives; and
WHEREAS, Individuals with eating disorders have a higher
mortality rate than individuals with mental illnesses; and
WHEREAS, Those who suffer from eating disorders often live in

the shadows and do not get the treatment and support they
deserve; and
WHEREAS, Eating disorders are potentially life-threatening
and have great impact on an individual's physical and emotional
health; and
WHEREAS, Individuals, families and communities are often
unaware of the devastating mental and physical consequences of
eating disorders; and
WHEREAS, In the United States, 20 million women and 10
million men suffer from clinically significant eating disorders
at some point in their life; and
WHEREAS, Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia
nervosa and binge eating disorders; and
WHEREAS, The National Eating Disorders Association strives to
address the many misconceptions regarding eating disorders and
highlight the availability of resources for treatment and
support; and
WHEREAS, During "National Eating Disorders Awareness Week,"
volunteers, including eating disorder professionals, health care
providers, students, educators, social workers and other
individuals, work collaboratively to raise awareness of the
dangers surrounding eating disorders and the need for early
intervention and treatment access; and
WHEREAS, The goal of "National Eating Disorders Awareness
Week" is to put the spotlight on eating disorders and improve
public understanding of the causes, dangers and treatments; and
WHEREAS, Millions of individuals across the country suffer
from eating disorders, but by increasing awareness and access to
resources, we can encourage early detection and intervention;
therefore be it
