A RESOLUTION
Recognizing December 26, 2016, as the 240th anniversary of the
Battle of Trenton.
WHEREAS, The American Revolution began in 1775 after the
British colonies began to rebel against the British empire; and
WHEREAS, By 1776, the Declaration of Independence was
ratified, and the new nation was struggling to fight against the
armed forces of their former king; and
WHEREAS, Commanded by General George Washington, the
Continental Army was the first organized militia assembled to
fight the Revolutionary War; and
WHEREAS, The Continental Army had suffered a series of
defeats and, without a victory, the army faced disbandment; and
WHEREAS, On Christmas Day of 1776, General George Washington
led his army of approximately 2,400 men, with cannons in tow,
across the icy Delaware River in an attempt to spring a surprise

attack against British forces; and
WHEREAS, Once the men crossed the Delaware River, they
completed a 19-mile trek during a freezing storm to Trenton, New
Jersey, where Colonel Johann Rall and 1,400 Hessian troops were
stationed; and
WHEREAS, As the men neared Trenton, General Washington split
the group to flank the formidable garrison; and
WHEREAS, The surprise attack was a great success for General
Washington; and
WHEREAS, During the battle, 22 of the Hessian troops died, 92
were wounded, 918 were captured and 400 escaped; and
WHEREAS, The Continental Army had only suffered five wounded
men and two men who froze to death; and
WHEREAS, The victory at Trenton was a key turning point in
the Revolutionary War for the newly independent nation;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
December 26, 2016, as the 240th anniversary of the Battle of
Trenton.
