AN ACT
Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
act relating to the public school system, including certain
provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
laws relating thereto," in high schools, providing for
graduation requirements for area vocational-technical school
students.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. The act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), known
as the Public School Code of 1949, is amended by adding a
section to read:
Section 1613.1. Graduation Requirements for Area Vocational-
Technical School Students.--(a) High school graduation
requirements for area vocational-technical school students that
are consistent with this section shall be approved by a school
entity's governing board by July 1, 2018. A copy of the
requirements shall be published and distributed to students,
parents and guardians. Copies of the requirements also shall be
available in each school building or on each school entity's

publicly accessible Internet website. Changes to high school
graduation requirements shall be published and distributed to
students, parents and guardians and made available in each
school building or on each school entity's publicly accessible
Internet website immediately following approval by the governing
board of the school entity.
(b) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the
contrary, beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, each school
entity, if applicable, shall require a student who is enrolled
full time in an area vocational-technical school to successfully
complete an internship that satisfies specifications developed
by the Department of Education.
(c) The Department of Education shall promulgate regulations
that include specifications for internships that provide
appropriate career and technical experience for students who are
enrolled full time in area vocational-technical schools.
(d) As used in this section, "school entity" shall mean a
school district, charter school, cyber charter school, area
vocational-technical school or intermediate unit.
Section 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
